Found the answer, my A7 III had firmware 2.0. I upgraded to firmware 2.10 which indicates fixes a problem for some 3rd party memory cards and now card slot #1 recognized a 128 sanddisk memory card and I was able to format and use it. So it seems to have fixed the issue.
